Johnny Football gets rockstar treatment at Capitol

Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel signed autographs and snapped photos with lawmakers and their families Wednesday as he was recognized by the Texas House and Senate.

“Everybody wants to claim Johnny Football, but I’ll settle it, he was born and raised in Tyler,” said state Sen. Kevin Eltife of Tyler, jokingly responding to other Senators who recognized Manziel.

Sen. Troy Fraser, whose district includes Kerrville, where Manziel played high school football, said Manziel has given the entire state of Texas “bragging rights.”

State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, kept his address to the quarterback short: “All I want to know, is did you really throw that football into that trashcan?”

The Senator was referencing a viral YouTube video in which Manziel tosses a football from the top of Kyle Field into a trashcan hundreds of feet below on the field.
