The first woman to score a point in a Division I football game gave a brutal assessment of Lauren Silberman, the first women to try out at the NFL’s regional scouting combine.
Katie Hnida, a former kicker for Colorado and New Mexico, said she couldn’t understand why Silberman did not warm up before the tryout and said her technique was not very good.
Silberman kicked only twice and the two kickoffs went for a total of 30 yards. Her day was complete after she said she aggravated a quad injury suffered in practice last week.
“Her performance does not have to do with her gender. It has to do with her experience and her preparation,” Hnida said to USA Today. “It is disappointing. I hoped she would go out and do justice for an NFL tryout, because there are lots of people who have dreamed of going to the NFL. It should be something serious. But she was terrible.”
Hnida should know something about those words. Former Colorado head coach Gary Barnett infamously told the media in 2004 that Hnida was “terrible” and was subsequently put on paid leave for those comments.
