I’m not sure what it is about this random January Tuesday that’s causing big brands to want to release cinematic trailers for their games, but joining Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm today is now The Elder Scrolls Online.
The upcoming MMO from Bethesda has just debuted a new cinematic spot called “Alliances,” that is a well animated and choreographed introduction to the game’s three warring factions, the Aldmeri Dominion, Daggerfall Covenant, and Ebonheart Pact. Naturally, each is represented by a familiar MMO/RPG archetype, a bruiser barbarian, a sexy elf mage and a lightning fast rogue assassin. You were expecting something else?
It’s a gorgeous cinematic, like Starcraft’s earlier, but of course the disparity between this and actual graphics and gameplay should be obvious to those of us who have been watching these sorts of trailers for years. Despite all our advancements in the field, the vast majority of the time, actual in-game footage is still worlds away from the promotional cutscene cinematics. Most recently, The Old Republic, for example, had some of the best advertisement cutscenes in memory last year, but it didn’t much help the actual content of the game any.
Still, there’s no other more effective way to show the badassness of your universe than a well animated short like this. It has more than a few fans wishing they’d scrap the whole MMO idea, and simply make a movie instead. We are indeed short of epic fantasy battles onscreen as of late with The Hobbit not being quite as epic in scope as the Lord of the Rings was, though I have a hunch Bethesda will stick to video games for now.
