Former Corrie star Sophiya Haque dies weeks after cancer diagnosis

FORMER Coronation Street and Bollywood star Sophiya Haque has died aged 41.

The actress — who played Poppy Morales, the assistant manager of the Rovers Return between 2008-2009 — died last night only weeks after being diagnosed with cancer.

She was performing in Michael Grandage's West End production Privates On Parade up until Christmas.

An ITV statement read: "We are saddened to hear the terrible news of Sophiya's death.

"She was a vibrant and beautiful actress who was a pleasure to have around during her time on Coronation Street. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this very sad time."

Corrie star Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) tweeted: "Just on set and heard the news about Sophiya Haque. So effing sad. Night night kiddo x."

Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster) also wrote on Twitter: "No way just heard about sophiya haque so sad. My heart goes out to the family."

Stuart Piper, of her agents Cole Kitchenn, said she was “one of the most inspirational people I ever met”.

He said: “She was the kind of person you always want to spend time with: full of light, warmth, compassion, care and with an infectiously wicked sense of humour, and I loved every minute of working with her.

“On stage, it was like you were watching her in close-up even if you were sat at the back of the stalls, such was her star presence and charisma.

“I am so desperately sad that she has been lost to the world at such a tragically young age, but feel blessed to have known her. Our whole team miss her greatly."

Sophiya started her dance training in her home town of Portsmouth before moving to London, where she played in a band and got a record deal with Warner Brothers, before working as a presenter for MTV Asia.

Haque moved to India in 1997 and starred in a string of films with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, before returning to the UK to appear in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams and a musical version of The Far Pavilions.
